Bernie Ecclestone, bos F1

What is your reaction to seventh place and another two points in Shanghai?
It was a satisfying result because before the race it had been a difficult weekend and we had a lot of work to do in order to improve the set–up. I wasn’t happy after qualifying but I pushed really hard in the race and we had a perfect strategy. To finish in the points when you start 12th with Formula 1 as competitive as it is at the moment is not easy so I am happy.

What challenges did you face earlier in the weekend?
Starting from Friday we didn’t really have a good balance in the car and I just didn’t seem to get it quite right. At the previous races in Fuji and Singapore we were consistent in terms of a reasonable pace from Friday onwards, but not in China. It was a bit strange because the track should have suited us pretty well. In particular I found that I couldn’t get the best out of the soft tyres, which explains my qualifying position.

Did you get a strong start?
It was not bad but Rubens Barrichello, who started behind me, got ahead in the confusion at the first corner. Jarno was hit by Sébastien Bourdais which meant that I made up two places there, but you don’t want to be doing that at the expense of your team-mate.

Did you get into a good rhythm straight away?
It was quite difficult actually because we had gone for a heavy one-stop strategy and, in fact, I did the longest opening stint of all, 32 laps. It meant that the car was very heavy in the beginning and I struggled a bit to warm up the tyres. There was nothing I could do to stop Mark Webber coming past on the second lap because he had 20 laps less fuel than me! At the end of the first stint I had a light car but I couldn’t make the most of it because I was stuck behind Nick Heidfeld. I was only eight seconds behind Robert Kubica at the finish so I think it’s possible we might have beaten him to sixth.

Was a one–stop strategy the right decision?
The goal was always to score points but I knew that it would be difficult from 12th so a one-stop strategy was definitely the right thing to do. Obviously with a heavy car at the beginning of each stint it is quite tricky but I did some competitive lap times and then on a lighter fuel load towards the end of the race I could really show my true pace. On the fastest lap classification I was sixth so that shows we had the speed, and finishing seventh after starting 12th shows we made the right call on strategy.

Have you enjoyed your marathon trip to the Far East?
It’s been interesting. I think Shanghai was a great event, really good for Formula 1, and it’s always interesting seeing different cultures like those in Singapore, Japan and China. But I have been away for four and a half weeks and I’m looking forward to seeing my own front door again; not to mention eating some European food and driving my Lexus ISF!

How would you assess your season with just one race to go?
I have enjoyed it a lot. I’ve had some up and downs; sometimes I have had bad luck. On the plus side I have shown a good improvement during the season and overall I’m happy. I’m two points ahead of the 20 point target I set myself for this season which is very positive. My ambition means I want to be at the top, so the pressure is always there from within, but the entire team has been very supportive; the race team, the test team and everyone at the factory. The team is always professional and has done everything to help me. It’s good to know they are behind me and I look ahead to an even stronger season in 2009.

Hunting in bottom of its first F1 title massed, resting seven points behind the Chief of championship Lewis Hamilton with remaining of three races.

However, there were some questions about Brazilian the of 'merit of S, particularly after postings as in Singapore when it seemed to give up after a stop of mine and botched lead-with through the penalty.

The pie of pig, although, believes Massa firmly not only has what it takes to gain the title but also deserves to make thus.

I think that he would be a worthy world champion. There is none exit, there pie of pig said the BBC.

It was a little a slow farmer, really, fact it was completely carefree and did many errors early in its career but it was always very fast.

Per year when I worked with him in Ferrari, had us our tops and low during the year but I think that it behaved extremely well. Felipe came on a long way.

It is a feeling made to echo by Massa 'engineer Rob Smedley of race of S. You the 'VE obtained a world champion in, of manufacture it insisted.

Him 's making any line this year. The whole team is behind him and each one pushes as hard as we can.

It continues to deliver and it must continue to deliver if it wants to gain the championship of the world. It knows that, we know that, and we just let us must do it
In a week that has seen one of the greatest put-downs the F1 world has ever seen we head to Mount Fuji and the location of a real (and very wet) F1 circus in 2007. The put-down had been delivered by Bernie Ecclestone, often described as F1's Ringmaster, after Ferrari boss Luca Montezemolo described the events of the Singapore GP as a circus. "If that's a circus," Bernie is reported to have said, "then Ferrari were the clowns."

You certainly don't get the heads of FIFA or the IOC, Sepp Blatter and Jacques Rogues, indulging in such knockabout humour. Though it's understandable that Montezemolo wanted to take his anger out on someone after Singapore and blamed the Safety Car - had Felipe Massa waited till the fuel line was off and rejoined the race, then he would have stayed in front of Lewis Hamilton and might even be three points in front of him coming into the Japanese GP, Safety Car or no Safety Car.

What Felipe should be comforted by is the fact that he produced one of the most stunning qualifying laps of the season to take pole in Singapore and he can easily score three more poles in the remaining three races. What is not clear is whether Kimi Raikkonen can stay right behind him to take three second places.

For a start Massa should stop listening to all the negative headlines about his chances for the World Championship - one single mistake, one engine failure from Lewis Hamilton could put him on the ropes. Raikkonen's comeback from 17 points behind Hamilton in 2007 is testament to that.

We know that at his home GP Massa will be on fire. He's a shoe-in for a victory. Ferrari perform well at warm tracks, Raikkonen did well in Brazil last year, and so Hamilton will have his work cut out if he's less than four points in front as we head to Interlagos. That means all Massa has to do is catch up three points in the next two races...

But having said all that, the likely cold and/or rain of Japan and China will perhaps suit McLaren better. And last year, even with traction control, Felipe Massa spun his race away at Mount Fuji. The race, which started in torrential rain, was one where Race Director Charlie Whiting inadvertently saved Ferrari's World Championship.

Whiting had sent an e.mail to all the teams before the start that they were compelled to start the race on the full wets. For some reason Ferrari ignored this and started on Inters. That reason was because their IT system was so blocked up the e.mail didn't arrive until after the race had started. Whiting demanded they changed to Inters or he was going to black flag them.

As it was, they were the right choice of tyre and instead of struggling round on them to see if conditions would improve, they took the penalty of the stop and then Raikkonen made a dramatic charge through the field using every inch of tarmac run-off he could find.

With rain never far away at Mount Fuji we could see at least one of the sessions run in the wet and that is almost always to Lewis Hamilton's advantage.

Hamilton spent a patient weekend at Singapore collecting points for his World Championship and though he clearly hates playing the percentage game, after 2007 he knows he has no choice. His ability at Mt Fuji won't be in question, but Heikki Kovalainen will have to do a lot better than he did at Singapore.

While Ferrari have a driver in Raikkonen who can interpose himself between Massa and Hamilton, rarely has Heikki been ahead of one of the Ferraris, let alone two. McLaren would have been better off luring Heidfeld from BMW than keeping Kovalainen for 2009. Nick was always going to be a McLaren driver from his F3000 days, but never made it to the full team.

With the news that BMW have re-signed Kubica and Heidfeld there might be a spirit of optimism in the squad going to Japan. Because Robert is only 13 points shy of Massa and if the wheels fall off the Ferrari wagon in the next two races he could even end up second in the Drivers' Championship.

The next big fight is the Renault vs Toyota battle for fourth place in the Constructors' Championship. Though Mount Fuji is home ground for Toyota, Renault are looking increasingly racy and have the advantage of a virtuoso driver in Fernando Alonso. Alonso's unlikely (but not undeserved) win in Singapore made it seven different GP winners in the season, which just endorses the view that 2008 is a vintage year for F1.

Nelson Piquet Junior has three races to save his F1 career, but it's looking increasingly unlikely he'll do it.

The other home boys, Honda and Kazuki Nakajima will be keen to impress in a country that loves its F1. There may be monsoon rain showers but the grandstands will still be packed. A bit like Silverstone in June. Nakajima will enjoy the focus of attention that always used to lift Takuma Sato - and with a new deal for 2009 in place, he should be free to take a few risks. Honda may not have such a happy time, but if they can beat Toyota at their home track then that will feel like winning the race

Ferrari target three one-two finishes

Ferrari believe their world championship ambitions are still alive, despite a disastrous Singapore Grand Prix leaving them trailing Lewis Hamilton.

A pitstop blunder resulted in Felipe Massa leaving the pits with his refuelling rig still attached to his car, effectively wrecking his evening, while Kimi Raikkonen crashed out near the end of the race.

Ferrari's troubles mean Hamilton now has a seven-point advantage in the drivers' standings over Massa, which means he can finish second to the Brazilian in the final three races and still win the title.

But Ferrari are not downbeat about the situation and instead are now only focused on scoring the one-two finishes that will secure Massa the crown.

Team principal Stefano Domenicali said: "We have three races to go, and we will approach the last three races with the fact we can do first and second every time. We have the potential to do it, so the target is very clear.

"It is not easy, but don't forget that we have faced a very difficult situation over the last couple of years, and we were sometimes able to win, sometimes unfortunately to lose, but the motivation is still the same.

"The team are very strong, but unfortunately you have the moments like today. But two hours after the race, we were already motivated and looking forward to doing to Japan to attack again."

With Raikkonen writing off his own championship chances after his Singapore crash, Domenicali said he was sure the Finn would do everything he could to help Massa win the title.

"I'm pretty sure he knows what he has to do," said Domenicali. "He will fight because he's part of the team, so I don't have any doubt about that.

Lewis Hamilton will be fine to race in next weekend's Belgian GP despite almost missing Sunday's Valencia race.

Hamilton suffered severe next pain that almost sidelined him in Spain, resulting in him needing injections in order to compete in Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race.

However, McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh is confident the Brit won't suffer the same fate when he tests at Monza on Friday before heading to Spa for next weekend's race.

"His physical problems are unlikely to disturb his fitness programme and we expect him to make a full recovery for both the Monza test and next week's Belgian GP,"

Sebastian Vettel continued his impressive run of form, setting the fourth best time ahead of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.

Kamui Kobayashi is a new recruit to Panasonic Toyota Racing as third driver, but he has been part of the Toyota family for much of his motorsport life.

As a member of the Toyota Young Drivers Programme (TDP), which is run by Toyota Motor Corporation, Kamui has been given all the training he needs - at the track and away from it - to step up from the Formula 3 Euro Series.

The TDP scheme helps young drivers not only on the track by giving support as they make their way through the ranks towards Formula 1, but also by providing language lessons, personal fitness programmes and seminars from experienced drivers away from the track.
For Kamui, the TDP scheme has helped him achieve his dream of joining the Formula 1 elite, as he says: "I started with TDP when I was 14 years old in Japan. I did just one season of Formula Toyota and came to Europe. They have given me great support and encouragement since then. They help me with a lot of things, such as teaching me English and helping me improve my driving and my feedback. They have been very good to me."

Kamui moved to Europe for the 2004 season and now lives in Paris, where he soaks up the atmosphere of one of the world's most cultural cities.

"There is an interesting atmosphere in Paris which I really like because of the big businessmen, the artists, the designers, all these important people who are there and give the city its character," he says. "It is a fascinating city to spend time in."

Kamui has progressed through the single-seater ranks in Europe after making a name for himself as a star of the future in Japanese junior racing.

With TDP support, Kamui moved to Europe in 2004 and spent two years in the Formula Renault Eurocup and Italian Formula Renault Championship, winning both crowns in 2005 - a title double only achieved previously by one other driver.

At the beginning of my career I was not thinking about Formula 1 - I just wanted to win each race. I never thought much about the future because it was far away from my situation at the time. Winning each race was my target but when I started racing single-seaters in Europe I started to dream of Formula 1. You have to work hard and be very determined to become a Formula 1 driver.

From there he stepped up to Formula 3, the traditional breeding ground for future Formula 1 stars, and, in 2006, after a promising first season at that level, Panasonic Toyota Racing offered him the chance to join its winter tests.

That experience certainly made an impression on Kamui, who says of a Formula 1 car: "Everything is just more extreme and it is a special experience to drive a Formula 1 car. It is difficult to drive at the limit of the car, at the limit of grip and at the limit of your concentration - it requires a high level of performance."

In all he completed three days behind the wheel at Barcelona and Jerez before returning to the Euro Series where he proved to be a formidable competitor, showing speed and commitment. At Magny-Cours, that was plain for the whole Formula 1 paddock to see when he pulled off a superb win in the French Grand Prix support race.

He finished fourth in the championship but had shown enough potential to be offered the third driver role with Panasonic Toyota Racing for 2008. ImageHost.org

He might be just 25, but Timo Glock has already had a varied and successful career in motorsport, arriving at Panasonic Toyota Racing as a proven champion.

For those who had not already spotted the young German on his globetrotting rise through the ranks, his 2007 GP2 Series campaign certainly brought him to the attention of the motorsport world.

The GP2 Series is renowned as the toughest proving ground for young drivers in the world but Timo showed his fighting spirit and speed to win the championship at a nerve-wracking final round in Valencia.

"Of course, to return to Formula 1 racing as GP2 Series champion is a real honour and we've all seen how well Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have performed as champions so that is very encouraging," Timo says. "In the end, it did not make a difference to my Formula 1 plans whether I finished first or second in GP2 but it was a big achievement to win the title and a special moment for me."

Timo was born in Lindenfels, around 250km away from the Panasonic Toyota Racing factory in Cologne, Germany, and he quickly became fascinated by motorsport.

Motorsport is the focus of Timo's life both on the track and away from it, and even when he has the chance to relax and have some fun, he is not too far away from four wheels. Like most aspiring drivers, he began racing in karts and he still enjoys a race with his friends - for him, racing and relaxation are inseparable.

He says: "When I have spare time I like to go karting with my friends. A lot of people ask why I would spend my spare time away from motorsport doing more motorsport but for me this is just natural. It's what I love doing. I find it relaxing and I can really enjoy myself."

Timo not only has passion for motorsport, he has great determination to succeed, as he showed in his first test for the team in December. He spent every possible moment working with his engineers to understand and improve the car, a tenacity he has learnt from people close to him.

"I most admire my father and my manager Hans Bernd," he adds. "Both are very focused on what they want and they work really hard to get it. I admire that."

The German is, like his new team, relatively young but has a wealth of different experience behind him since taking his first steps into the world of motorsport as a 15-year-old in karts.

After just two years of kart racing he stepped up to single-seaters and enjoyed an impressive rise through the ranks to Formula 1, via ADAC Formula BMW and Formula 3. At just 22 he was a Grand Prix racer with an unexpected Jordan debut in Canada in 2004, where he joined an exclusive list of drivers to score points in their first race, thanks to his seventh place.

Three more races followed at the end of the season before a switch to the United States for 2005, where he marked himself out as a rising star by taking Rookie of the Year honours, with a best finish of second, coincidentally also in Montreal.

However, the lure of Formula 1 was too great and he returned to prove his credentials in GP2. That looked a wise move this year when he came out on top of a tough title battle, helping him earn a race seat at Panasonic Toyota Racing in the process. ImageHost.org

Jarno Trulli has been a Panasonic Toyota Racing driver since October 2004, bringing not only speed and race craft, but also the benefit of his vast experience of Formula 1, and life itself.

Motorsport is his passion, but that only tells half of the Jarno Trulli story. As well as racing, he produces his own wine, now a flourishing international business, while also building his own karts and - not to forget - enjoying a happy family life with wife Barbara and their two sons, Enzo and Marco.

He says: "I think I just see life in a different way. We all have different personalities and now I have a family I understand a bit more about certain things."
Family is important for Jarno, so it was natural that when he looked for an opportunity away from motorsport, he chose to produce wine, a family tradition from his grandfather's time.

And success comes naturally to the quiet Italian so, after buying the vineyard in the Podere Castorani region in 2000, he has rapidly expanded from around 18,000 bottles a year, to an impressive 600,000 now.

"The year 2000 vintage was our first season and it was a really good season," Jarno says. "It was strange for me to drink a bottle of my own wine but I was happy because it was produced from my land and my passion.

"It is a really good feeling, especially when people appreciate my wine. It is great because when I travel around the world to Australia or to Canada and many other places I find my wine!"

Jarno, who has scored three podiums and one pole position for the team, has made 181 Grands Prix starts since his debut as a 22-year-old, following an impressive career in junior racing, including the 1995 world kart championship and the German Formula 3 title a year later.

In that first season, he started with Minardi but caught the eye of former world champion Alain Prost, who signed him as a temporary replacement for the injured Olivier Panis. That proved a good decision and Jarno scored a fine fourth place at the Nürburgring before sensationally leading in Austria.

After such impressive performances, Prost signed Jarno permanently for 1998 and 1999. Times were not always easy at his new team, but in the torrential rain at the Nürburgring, his hard work paid off with second place. Jordan was Jarno's home for the next two seasons and he continued to catch the eye, his reputation as one of the fastest drivers over one lap blossoming thanks to front row starts at Monaco and Spa-Francorchamps - both famed as the ultimate test for drivers - in 2000 and four more in 2001.

Bad luck kept him from the podium, with fourth his best result at Jordan before a change of scenery for 2002 with a move to Renault. He outshone his team-mate but fourth was again his best result. Matters improved in 2003 and Jarno was third in Hockenheim, twice starting from the front row.

The 2004 season saw the greatest day so far in Jarno's career, when he won from pole position at Monaco. But, despite another pole at Spa, he left Renault before the season's end, joining Toyota for the last two races.

After achieving a personal milestone with his Monaco win, in 2005 he delivered more for his new team, taking Toyota's first Formula 1 podiums with second places in Malaysia and Bahrain, and third in Spain, as well as the team's maiden pole position, at Indianapolis.

Seventh place in the World Championship was his reward while Toyota's best season yet saw the team finish fourth in the Constructors' Championship.

Points were harder to come by in 2006, but a battling fourth place at Indianapolis delivered some return on his usual impressive qualifying pace, which included third on the grid at the final race in Brazil.

Jarno showed his speed again in 2007 by qualifying in the top 10 on 14 occasions, with a best result of sixth.
